Accessibility at ShAFF

Audio described and captioned screenings, and any support needed with booking tickets or attending the festival

About

Film festivals are still largely inaccessible for many people, and we'd love to be part of the change that results in all attendees feeling that their needs have been met so that they can just enjoy their time with us. We're working with several people this year to make this more of a reality, with the commitment that with each festival, we will keep making progress in all areas of accessibility.

Audio Description (AD)

We have two film collections this year in which all of the films have been audio described. The cinema uses the Fidelio System with which the Fidelio receivers can be equipped with either a set of headphones or a neck loop which can connect to hearing aids that use the ‘T’ loop pickup. The headphones or neck loop can be picked up from the Box Office ahead of your screening.

The film collections are:

Walk Films - Saturday 22nd March at 11am

Wild Swim and Water Films 2 - Saturday 22nd March at 1pm and Sunday 23rd March at 3:15pm

On-screen Captions

We have 42 films in the festival this year that will have on-screen captions. We will list the films and the collections they're in over the coming days.

Accessibility at the Festival

Showroom Cinema, where all films will be screened, is wheelchair accessible and has accessible toilets. Showroom Cafe, where all panels and workshops will be held, is also wheelchair accessible. Please read more about their accessibility here

The Workstation, where all brand stalls will be hosted, is wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet.

Support Attending the Festival

We can provide a wide range of support for you to ensure that you enjoy your time at the festival. If you require somebody to help you navigate around the festival, please do send us an email to access@shaff.co.uk letting us know what day/s you'll be attending, and we can assign a volunteer to greet you and support you throughout the day/s.

Support with Booking Tickets

For any reason that you might be having issues with booking tickets, please do send us an email to access@shaff.co.uk and a member of our team will aim to reply within 24-48 hours.

We hope that we can make your time with us at Sheffield Adventure Film Festival as brilliant an experience as it can be, but we acknowledge that we still have much more to do. We welcome any feedback you have, so please don't hesitate to send us an email to access@shaff.co.uk. On the festival weekend itself, you can also pass on your feedback to a member of the team or a volunteer, all of whom will be easily identifiable in red and maroon ShAFF t-shirts.

Filmmakers

If you would like to make your films more accessible, we have three resources for you to check out, the first one being a workshop that you can attend at ShAFF:

  • Workshop with Danielle Sellwood of Find It Film (who directed the film, Untethered) on Saturday 22nd March at Showroom Cafe (time TBC) where she will be showing you best practice of how to make sure that your on-screen captions are easily readable, and your audio descriptions are on-point. She will also be on-hand to answer any questions you might have.
  • A PDF document that Danielle produced with the wonderful, local outdoors production house, Coldhouse Collective, providing a range of info on captions, AD, alt text and BSL for films.
  • A short 4 minutes video tutorial by the Lauren and John from the brilliant T-Shirt Twins of how to add audio description to your films
