Best Of ShAFF - Like A Wolf
On October 18, 2006, with her ski descent of Everest, professional ski mountaineer Kit DesLauriers completed a 2.5-year journey to climb and ski from the highest peak on each of the seven continents (Denali, Elbrus, Kosciusko, Vinson, Aconcagua, Kilimanjaro, and Everest). She was the first person to have accomplished this feat. The film “Like A Wolf” combines never-seen footage from the expeditions and interviews of elite teammates (Damian Benegas, Wally Berg, Jimmy Chin, Rob DesLauriers, and Dave Hahn) and Kit’s parents to tell an inspirational story. “Like A Wolf” shows how a nascent thought, written as part of a marriage/relationship development exercise became a first of its kind accomplishment, through serendipity, perseverance, and teamwork. Each mountain had its particular challenges – weather, poisoning, extreme ruggedness, and improbability… The movie recounts these adventures and explores the underpinning personal journeys and relationships -- including a one-of-a-kind connection to Alta, a wolf, which taught Kit many life lessons, in particular the importance of remaining true to one’s nature and doing what you are born to do.
Kit’s journey was again in people’s mind with the release of Kit’s book “Higher Love: Skiing the Seven Summits”, which was written to placate her fans desire to hear more stories about the undertaking. MONTAGE had access to the expedition footage, taken by Kit’s husband Rob DesLauriers, Jimmy Chin, Damian Benegas, and Kit herself, much of it never before seen, and was able to interview key expedition teammates: Jimmy Chin, Dave Hahn, Wally Berg, Damian Benegas – a veritable who’s who of mountaineering and skiing elite, to tell the stories from their perspective as part of Kit’s team and the challenges (including the possibility of death of Kit’s husband on Everest) while achieving her goal of being the first person in the world to successfully climb AND ski from the tallest mountain on each of the continents. Providing some perspective, Lawrence Schiller, the director of Emmy-award winning documentary “The Man Who Skied Down Everest” also appears in the film.
