A tale of resilience, grit and elite rescue volunteers going out of their way to save the lives of strangers, 109 BELOW traces how an attempted rescue on Mount Washington in 1982 changed not only the course of two climbers’ lives - but also the lives of the rescuers who attempted to save them, and the future of prosthetics, forever.
Just a four hour drive outside of Boston, Mount Washington is home to some of the most extreme weather on Earth. Winds regularly hit 200+ mph and in January 2021, at the time of filming, Mount Washington’s summit recorded a temperature of -109, the coldest ever recorded in North America. Despite its dangers, Mount Washington is a major attraction for hikers and skiers alike, and is readily accessible from nearby Boston. Each year, dozens of visitors attempt the summit – without realizing the true dangers they face. 109 BELOW explores the incredible - sometimes fatal - sacrifices made by the Mountain Rescue Service, an elite all-volunteer search and rescue crew on the summit of Mount Washington.
