Split

How do we navigate our minds, passions and purpose in a time of crisis? Two best friends with different approaches on a remote splitboard expedition in Greenland.

Bright arctic scene with two split boarders pulling pulks in front of distant icebergs frozen into the ice. One is in motion, the other is standing still.

Split follows the physical and mental journeys of best friends Tom and James - both environmentalists, both airline pilots and both inexperienced in the arctic - as they embark and reflect on a remote splitboard expedition in Greenland. With humour and depth, filmmaker and expedition teammate Charlotte follows how each navigates their minds, passions and purpose in a time of crisis.
Director's statement:
When I first agreed to join the expedition to Greenland as filmmaker - I thought the film would just be about the trip itself. Upon meeting Tom and James - the protagonists - this entirely changed. Their characters, relationship and story captured me in such a way I felt there was no option but to take the time to make a much deeper, character driven film.
The theme of contrast and dichotomy arose in so many aspects of the story, it fitted perfectly with the nature of the expedition itself which was to be the longest splitboard journey in the world. The ‘split’ appears in how Tom and James differ in their personalities, their mindsets and their approaches to living as environmental activists and airline pilots.
It particularly resonated with me and I hope it will with others as we all try to navigate our minds, passions and purpose in a time of climate and mental health crisis. Naturally, I seem to tell stories in a humorous way - so despite dealing with what can be heavy topics, my debut film Split provides comedy, thoughtful moments and ultimately hope.
