Ron Bartle recalls his 1958 crossing of the Sprengisandur, a vast volcanic wilderness that spans the centre of Iceland. Against all odds, Ron and three other companions of the Rough Stuff Fellowship overcame hundreds of miles of lava fields and deep glacial rivers to safely finish the journey by bicycle - but were they first?
