Red Run | Sheffield's abandoned ski village

Is there something we have lost in our great city?

Sheffield Ski Village closed in April 2012. We took two skiers and one boarder back to the charred remains of the dry ski slope where they learned to ski. The ski village was a key piece in the journey of some of the UK's best freestyle skiers to the top of their sport, including James Woods, James Machon, Ellie Koyander and Katie Summerhayes, all of whom are now Team GB athletes. Our aim is to drum-up support for the Sheffield Ski Village in the city known as the sporting capital of the United Kingdom. The song is ours, it's called "Wolves (Take You)" and it is on Wildling debut EP, which is coming out in December. Sheffield mountain biking at it's best.

It seemed a logical decision to base Escapade7's first short film production in Wharncliffe woods, a location where both myself (Gee) and Sam have spent many hours shooting mountain bikes over recent years. Combining Sheffield riders and newly formed Sheffield based company Airdrop bikes, we produced this short film specifically made for SHAFF. James, Max & Rob collectively known as Clayspades have created an incredible array of trails and features in the woods which are constantly evolving, it's safe to say the scene right now has never been so good.

This film was shot early 2016 in the beautiful British Peak District. It follows a group of four friends - Ali Gover, Bodil Oudshoorn, Libby Kerr and Lisa Trollope - as they train for the longest race they have ever attempted. After multiple years of entering but not making it through the lottery for a place in the race, the girls finally got in. They excitedly started their training, spending many nights on boggy hillsides perfecting their navigation and cementing their friendship. Throughout training the girls learn that not everything is within their control and when race day comes, they decide to make the best of what the weather throws at them.

Beulah

A bikepacking journey to discover the wild very north-west tip of Scotland. Expect loaded bikes, empty roads & wilderness, campfires, bothies, tents and a steady flow of single malt.

Beulah follows a Pannier cycle tour to explore the Cape Wrath track; a journey inspired by a 1970s OS Map Sheet of the most north-westerly part of Scotland found in a Hay-on-Wye bookshop. Stefan, Will, Jordan and Luke set off from London on the sleeper train one evening to ride a three day circular route at the golden touring pace of 10mph; turns out they probably dropped to an even lower average.

More than discuss the details of this trip in particular, Pannier and Brother Cycles wanted to celebrate the general idea of heading off on bike adventures. The eight-minute short was filmed totally unsupported (Luke, the filmmaker, carried all the kit on his bike) and they wanted to make it this way for two reasons: to provide an authentic account of what it was like to be on a Pannier adventure cycling trip, and to test it out and see if it was possible...

Wow, a massively inspiring and beautifully shot account of the 400k 8-day Cape Wrath Ultra race, following runners of all levels, male and female, with interviews, voice overs and absolutely stunning views of Scotland that make you want to enter this race immediately. They bring out the characters well with humour, and it wasn't all about the elites, it was the whole vibe and community spirit. It was heartwarming and you got a real sense of the camaraderie the race created. The race also seemed quite accessible as you can see the trails are relatively easy and not many runners seem to be completely utterly exhausted or emotional, apart from a wee cry at the end and a shock shot of some very trail-beaten feet! Despite this, we are signing up next year, all of us!

FORGOTTEN BY ALL WHO WALK ABOVE, The Victorians constructed an engineering masterpiece. In the 1860s work began on a huge underground storm drain known as THE MEGATRON. Its job was to prevent the City of Sheffield, UK from flooding year after year and disrupting the steel industry for months at a time. The flood waters now rest below the city in huge tunnels waiting to be explored by the Sheffield people. We took two of Sheffield's wakeboarders beneath the rock to see what they could put together.

In the spring of 2016 19 year old Jimmy Hyland boarded a plane to Mongolia. Having spent his life reading books, watching films and hearing stories of adventure he decided it was time to find his own. Drastically unprepared and armed with little more than a bike he had bough the week before for £50 and a few basic tools Jimmy set off into the steppe, but all did not go to plan.

This is the story of Jimmy's first taste of travelling alone in a totally alien land. Continually battling wind, bitter cold temperatures, mechanical problems and solitude which pushed him to his limits, it wasn't until he discovered the incredible Mongolian hospitality that he got back on track.

Why would anyone run in the mountains barefoot?

Aleks Kashefi is a science teacher from the UK who began running just 3 years ago. He soon discovered running in the mountains and found it gave him a huge sense of freedom but there was something missing... Or rather something that needed to be lost, his shoes! Aleks realised that running barefoot in these remote and challenging locations added a huge amount more fun to each run, so he lost the shoes and began to do it the 'pure' way. Running Sucks - Story of a Barefoot Runner follows the story of Aleks's running career and why he finds running barefoot such a different experience to running conventially. It was filmed in the build up to a huge trip that Aleks made to run the length of Europe from Norway to Sicily along the E1 trail solo and barefoot.

The Mam Nick Hill Climb

A short film showing this gruesome but beautiful genre of bicycle racing.

Brendon Tyree is one of the secretaries of the Rutland Cycling club as well as a film maker. This year he took his camera along to their annual hill climb race on Mam Nick. The aim was to capture some of the pain and beauty within this simple genre of bike racing, and then show it off as a short piece of film. As it happened the light, wind and the atmosphere came together nicely with the record breaking ride by Chris Dyke, and now this window into the Rutland's hill climb is to be screened at film festivals in over 20 cities around the world.

Wow, what an incredible story - Nicky Spinks, former triple UK-mountain round record holder, had breast cancer 10 years ago and last year tackled a DOUBLE Bob Graham Round! This is a great film learning all about Nicky's diagnosis and treatment via an interview with her interspersed with action of her and her friends on the round. Fantastic film, lots of great shots, and a brilliant, brilliant story.

Nicky Spinks is a beef farmer from Yorkshire and one of the UK's best fell runners. In 2006, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, turning her world upside down. 'Run Forever' looks at Nicky's inspirational life and her record breaking attempt of a double Bob Graham Round in the Lake District; a 132 mile route, with 54000ft of ascent, that only one person has completed in under 48 hours.

This film follows Irish climber David Fitzgerald, who after taking up the sport only 5 years ago, travelled to the Peak District to try the hardest bouldering problems on grit. After sending Deliverance (7B+) and The Ace (8B) David set his sights on Voyager sit start (8B+). Voyager was set by Ben Moon in 2006 and had only been climbed by two others (Niccolò Ceria and Ned Feehally) before David. It is widely regarded as the hardest route on grit. David was filmed in the Peaks and in his home city of Dublin over the course of two months in spring 2017, while working on the route and training indoors. David is sponsored by MoonClimbing. Wheel Love

A message from home, created in the orange months. Wheel Love is about friendship, creativity and good times.

We are a group of friends brought together by bicycles. Living in and around Sheffield, we take great pride in our beautiful city and the broad spread of talent in sports and other creative outlets that stems from it, this provided huge inspiration to show what 'home' means for us. Until Autumn of 2017 the plans of creating a film have never become much more than an "imagine if". It's thanks to the levels of commitment and passion from the group of friends we are lucky to have around us that this project finally took root. The project stretched over 3 months - this time consisted of digging, filming, editing... hurting, recovering. Wheel love means a hell of a lot to us, it's something that we can always look back on and appreciate the amazing times we had crashing and trying again. From Executive Producer James Cromwell and award-winning director Keegan Kuhn (Cowspiracy, What The Health) comes RUNNING FOR GOOD, the feature-length sports documentary narrated by Rich Roll (Finding Ultra), following world record marathon runner Fiona Oakes in her attempt not only to set a new global record in endurance racing, but to compete in the “toughest footrace on earth,” the Marathon Des Sables, a 250km race through the Sahara Desert. Fiona Oakes has made a name for herself as a unique endurance runner. She is the fastest woman in the world to run a marathon on all seven continents, and the north pole, in both cumulative and elapsed time. Fiona’s achievements are made even more astounding due to the fact that she was told at age 14 that she would never walk properly, let alone ever run. She would undergo more than 17 radical knee surgeries which ultimately led to having her entire right kneecap removed. The process was agonizing, the rehab worse, the records she’s gone on to set even more astounding. With overcoming her own adversity, Fiona’s true drive to achieve incredible feats of speed and human endurance are motivated by a deep desire to raise awareness for the plight of animals. Her achievements help fund a 450+ animal sanctuary that she takes care of every day.

This Girl Can Sheffield 2017

A promotion filmed in Sheffield that tries to capture the essence of what is important about sports and why participating is all that matters.

This film tries to capture the essence of what is important about sports and why participating is all that matters. The events gave women the opportunity to try sports that they might never have heard of and so the aim of the film was to capture the feeling of enjoyment of a sport and trying to avoid making it about excellence. This is not about winners or losers it's about that early morning feeling and getting back on the bike. Filmed as a promotion for a week of events by the Sports Committee of Sheffield Students' Union as a partner of the official This Girl Can campaign in October 2017. Planned, filmed and edited in the 3 weeks running up to the start of the week being promoted this was a typical student project. Forge TV approached the Sheffield Students' Union Sports Officer with the idea of creating a promotional video and from that point on it was all hands on deck. From finding locations and arranging transport to filming sports we had never thought to film before this was a very large learning curve for everyone involved. This film probably would have never got made anywhere other than Sheffield, it has a special atmosphere that makes this sort of concept possible.

Underdog

Damian Hall, outdoor journalist, runner and father, takes on the world's most infamous race in a bid to break the top 10.

“My name’s Damian. I’m British. I’m 42. I live in the Cotswolds. I’m an outdoor journalist. I’m having a mid-life crisis, and that means I like to run ultramarathons, and I’ve got a UTMB problem…. It’s got 10,000 metres of climb–Everest is eight-and-a-half thousand metres. To be top 10 at UTMB® –that, to me, is the dream. The runners I’m against are mostly full-time, they’re younger than me, a lot of them live and train in the mountains. Realistically the pedigree of the other runners… it’s unlikely, most people would say. So I just want to give my best effort. I do want to be in the top 10. There are lots of things against me. But it gives me an underdog spirit.”
